Verse of the Day 10/5

Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.  English Standard Version (ESV)

I've often looked at Psalm 37 in relation to the call not to fret.  In the ESV, "do not fret" is repeated three times and we cannot avoid the importance of that.  But as with other things in life, what is eliminated must be replaced with something or Someone, because that void will need to be replaced by something.

Today's verse calls for us, challenges us to "commit our way to the Lord".  That fretting is to be replaced with committing, turning those things over to the Lord.  The Message says "open up before God", be open and honest, after all, we are not keeping anything from Him that He doesn't already know.  In fretting, we are keeping things to ourselves and letting them get to us.

I read this quote and have it posted here in my e-Bible "A cheerful person who refuses to notice trifles or be aggravated by them -- soon ceases to feel them!  While to those who seem to find a perverse pleasure in dwelling on, and being daunted by them -- these little discomforts will actually become real cares, and will eat out half the comfort of their lives."

What "trifles" are you fretting about, taking your attention from better things?  Turn them over, commit them to the Lord and move on.  He cares for you and will cause those trifles to "shrivel away".  Only trust Him.

Yes, Jesus is the truth the way
that leads you into rest;
believe in him without delay,
and you are fully blest.

Only trust him, only trust him,
only trust him now.
He will save you, he will save you,
he will save you now.

In Christ,
Mike

Psalm 37:1-6The Message (MSG)

A David Psalm

37 1-2 Don't bother your head with braggarts
    or wish you could succeed like the wicked.
In no time they'll shrivel like grass clippings
    and wilt like cut flowers in the sun.

3-4 Get insurance with God and do a good deed,
    settle down and stick to your last.
Keep company with God,
    get in on the best.

5-6 Open up before God, keep nothing back;
    he'll do whatever needs to be done:
He'll validate your life in the clear light of day
    and stamp you with approval at high noon.
