Verse of the Day 12/1

2 Peter 1:16-17 For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory:

This is My beloved Son.
I take delight in Him!          Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

As I read these verses in 2Peter 1 in the read through the New Testament schedule it struck me that it is a fitting verse to start the Advent Season.  The world around us may join us in celebrating Christmas, giving gifts and spending time with family and friends while hearing stories surrounding Jesus' birth.  Unfortunately, many will view these stories as fables or myths that have been created and evolved over time.

The Bible is full of eye witness accounts in all of these "stories" that make them events in history and not merely stories.  There were witnesses of His coming, of His living, of His dying, of His resurrection and His ascension.  They all point to the fact that Jesus is who the Bible says He is.

In this passage Peter takes the stand as a witness to many things in the life of Jesus and looks back to his mountaintop experience when he was with Jesus when God spoke and said, "this is my Son, in whom I am well pleased".  These events in Peter and the other disciples lives gave them courage to testify, to proclaim and give glory to God for sending Jesus to us.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas in a few weeks we should take to heart and share with others that we are not "wishing on a star" regarding these facts regarding His coming 2000 years ago nor are we wishing on a star when we look for His return in glory, they are both certainties.  His Word declares it and we are to believe it and take it to heart.

May we "take delight in Him" each day of this advent season and through the rest of our days until He does return to take us home.

John 14:2-3  In My Father's house are many dwelling places;[a] if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.   Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB

2 Peter 1:16-18The Message (MSG)

16-18 We weren't, you know, just wishing on a star when we laid the facts out before you regarding the powerful return of our Master, Jesus Christ. We were there for the preview! We saw it with our own eyes: Jesus resplendent with light from God the Father as the voice of Majestic Glory spoke: "This is my Son, marked by my love, focus of all my delight." We were there on the holy mountain with him. We heard the voice out of heaven with our very own ears.
