Verse of the Day 1/11

Verse of the Day 1/11

Matthew 6:19-21.                     Holman Christian Standard Bible

19 "Don't collect for yourselves treasures[a] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I normally limit my "verse of the day" posts to one or two verses, but in reading today's verses I didn't feel like I could or should separate verse 21 from the previous two verses.
In our society, you cannot watch much TV without seeing and investment commercial.  Many of us have 401k's, pension funds, and IRA's to help us prepare for our retirement.  But how much time to we spend preparing for our eternal home?  The things that we stockpile will go to someone else when we die.  But if we give of ourselves today (as we considered in yesterday's post) we are actually investing in the future.

The things of this world rust, decay or become obsolete.  The things that are eternal do not.  Also, they will be of no use to us where we are going.

A.W. Tozer writes, "The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One.  Many ordinary treasures may be denied him, or if he is allowed to have them, the enjoyment of them will be so tempered that they will never be necessary to his happiness.  Or if he must see them go, one after one, he will scarcely feel a sense of loss, for having the Source of all things, he has in One all satisfaction, all pleasure, all delight.  Whatever he may lose he has actually lost nothing, for he now has it all in One, and he has it purely, legitimately, forever." A. W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God (London, 1967), page 20.

    • Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Read the passage below and consider, what or where is your treasure?

Blessings,
Mike

God and Possessions

19 "Don't collect for yourselves treasures[a] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness!

24 "No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money.

The Cure for Anxiety

25 "This is why I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing?
