Verse of the Day 1/23

2 Timothy 2:1-2  English Standard Version

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

Most of you who are reading this post are involved in studying the Bible.  We are members of small group Bible studies; are leaders of a Bible study (or both); and regularly are taught by our Pastors through sermons every week. All of this helps to strengthen us in our faith and to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  But what about the last part of verse 2.  How much are we doing to entrust others to teach and to pass it on, to pass that faith along to others in our lives - kids, grandkids, friends, neighbors and co-workers?

Why do we need this strengthening?  Look ahead to the first verses of chapter 3 in 2 Timothy.

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,

We may not think that we are in the last days, but I think that we can "understand this" , that we are in days of difficulty and live in a society that lives up to the description of verse 2, beginning with being "lovers of self" and "lovers of money".

Read the passage below.  May it encourage you to grow in grace and to pass your faith along, entrust it to some who will continue to pass it along to others in these troubled times.

Godlessness in the Last Days

3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
