Verse of the Day 7/6

Through the Bible - Job 37-38, Acts 15

Good morning,
This morning we'll follow up on yesterday's subject of Fanny Crosby hymns with another, "Blessed Assurance" and for today's verse we'll go to one that deals with that subject, our assurance.
1 John 5:
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.   NIV

John wrote the gospel of John that we might believe (John 20:31)  But these are written that you may  believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.   NIV
You might say that he wrote 1 John that you would have assurance," know that you have eternal life."

James MacDonald writes, "The book of 1 John repeatedly explains the distinguishing characteristics of followers of Christ. No one has them perfectly, but look at your life and ask yourself if you're increasing in these marks:

- Am I loving more deeply? Not perfectly, but increasingly . . .
- Am I obeying more faithfully? Not perfectly, but increasingly . . .
- Am I living authentically?

When you see these marks in your life, and you know that you long to know Him more and be passionate about doing what pleases Him increasingly more in your life, then your heart swells with assurance. You belong to Him."

Fanny Crosby captures this in her song "Blessed Assurance".  Watching and waiting, looking above, filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

RefrainThis is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

In Christ,
Mike

Eph 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace  NIV
1 John 5:13-21

Conclusion

13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

18 We know that God's children do not make a practice of sinning, for God's Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them. 19 We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.

21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts.   NLT
