Verse of the Day 12/30

Jeremiah 6:16  Thus says the Lord:
"Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls."   English Standard Version (ESV)

As we come to the end of one year and look forward to the start of a new one on Tuesday, all of us stand at some sort of cross roads.  We can look back at the past year, at the paths chosen and see where they have brought us.  They may help us to look ahead and to where we will start the New Year.

The words to a country gospel song come to mind.

Take the narrow way, walk the high road,
Like an arrow stay straight on the line,
If you find yourself where you have to decide,
Stay away from the path that is wide,
Take the narrow way.

We will have the opportunity to take the highway, the multi-lane highway where "everyone else" travels.  If we choose that course I doubt that we will find true happiness, lasting joy or peace.  Choosing the narrow path may not bring some of the thrills of the moment, but it will bring the peace and rest for your souls that this verse talks about.  Choose the ancient path of following Christ.

Matthew 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. 14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it." Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
In Christ,
Mike

Jeremiah 6:15-17  Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
15 Were they ashamed when they acted so abhorrently?
They weren't at all ashamed.
They can no longer feel humiliation.
Therefore, they will fall among the fallen.
When I punish them, they will collapse,
says the Lord.
Disaster because of Disobedience

16 This is what the Lord says:

Stand by the roadways and look.
Ask about the ancient paths:
Which is the way to what is good?
Then take it
and find rest for yourselves.
But they protested, "We won't!"

17 I appointed watchmen over you
and said: Listen for the sound of the ram's horn.
But they protested, "We won't listen!"
