Verse of the Day 1/15

Verse of the Day 1/15

Psalm 128:1-2 Blessed is every one who fears the Lord,

Who walks in His ways.
2 When you eat the labor of your hands,
You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. New King James Version (NKJV)

What are some of the things that people think will make them happy? Prosperity, good health, or perhaps power and influence; being respected; or for those of us with grandchildren, seeing our kids and grandchildren do well? Yes, these things can bring some degree of happiness, even temporary joy. But in the course of our lives what truly leads to that feeling of being blessed, having joy, down into your soul?

The Christian life is often referred to as our walk. Walking is how we navigate most of our days, it is our basic mode for getting around. Everybody has a "walk" but it is what motivates and what brings those joys, that truly decides where we will go in life and whether or not we will be happy, joyful in all of life's ebbs and flows.

"Who walk in His ways." Charles Spurgeon writes, "The pious life which God declares to be blessed, must be practical. It is idle to talk of fearing the Lord, if we act like those who have no care whether there is a God or not. God's ways will be our ways, if we have a sincere reverence for Him. If the heart is truly joined unto God, the feet will follow hard after Him. ....A man's heart will be seen in his walk, and the blessing will come where heart and walk are both with God."

Thinking of life's ebbs and flows reminded me of the hymn "There's Within My Heart a Melody". Read the words below, sing them if you know them as you head out on your "walk" today.

There's within my heart a melody
Jesus whispers sweet and low:
Fear not, I am with thee, peace, be still,
in all of life's ebb and flow.
Refrain:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,
sweetest name I know,
fills my every longing,
keeps me singing as I go.

2. All my life was wrecked by sin and strife,
discord filled my heart with pain;
Jesus swept across the broken strings,
stirred the slumbering chords again.
(Refrain)

3. Though sometimes he leads through waters deep,
trials fall across the way,
though sometimes the path seems rough and steep,
see his footprints all the way.
(Refrain)

4. Feasting on the riches of his grace,
resting neath his sheltering wing,
always looking on his smiling face,
that is why I shout and sing.
(Refrain)

5. Soon he's coming back to welcome me
far beyond the starry sky;
I shall wing my flight to worlds unknown;
I shall reign with him on high.

Blessings,

Mike

Psalm 128 English Standard Version (ESV)

Blessed Is Everyone Who Fears the Lord
A Song of Ascents.

128 Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways!
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the Lord.
5 The Lord bless you from Zion!
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life!
6 May you see your children's children!
Peace be upon Israel!
