Verse of the Day 1/19

Verse of the Day 1/19

Ephesians 1:13  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,     English Standard Version (ESV)

In the coming week the impeachment trial will begin in the U.S. senate and people will be giving testimony about the truth of the matter.  We will hear conflicting statements and "truth" may actually have little to do with what is going on.

The other day we considered some truths about our faith, about receiving and believing the absolute truth about Jesus.  In our search for truth we are to go to the Bible and it won't let us down or try to deceive for the purposes of serving an agenda.  In Christ, and through the "Word" who became flesh and lived among us, we receive and believe in His truth.

In this short passage in Ephesians 1 we read several truths, several things that we have "in Him"; in Jesus Christ.

  • In Him we have redemption and forgiveness through His blood v.7
  • In Him we have an inheritance and a purpose v.11
  • In Him we have our salvation and the seal of the Holy Spirit v.13

John MacArthur writes, "Paul rightly called the gospel "the message of truth" because truth is its predominant characteristic. Salvation was conceived by the God of truth (Ps. 31:5); purchased by the Son, who is the truth (John 14:6); and is applied by the Spirit of truth (John 16:13). To know it is to know the truth that sets men free (John 8:32). Believers are people of the truth (John 18:37), who worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), and who obey the Word of truth (John 17:17). "

Read the passage below and consider what it means to you to have seen and heard His truth.  Maybe you'll feel something like this about these truths.

Isn't He wonderful, wonderful, wonderful
Isn't Jesus my Lord wonderful
Eyes have seen, ears have heard
It's recorded in God's Word
Isn't Jesus my Lord wonderful

Ephesians 1:7-14 New King James Version (NKJV)

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and [a]prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, [b]both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who[c] is the [d]guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
