Verse of the Day 5/14

Verse of the Day 5/14

1 Peter 1:2b-3  May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.   Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

In these verses Peter asks, prays that God's grace and peace be multiplied to his hearers in accordance with God's great mercy.  It was a tumultuous time and the church was being persecuted.  Peter was giving words of reassurance and hope, not just any hope, but a living hope in the person and presence of Jesus Christ.

Our hopes come from our risen Savior sent to us by the Father and ministered to us by the Spirit.  How good is that?  Richard Sibbes writes, "God's goodness is spreading, imparting goodness...  God is more willing to bestow good than we are to ask it.  He is so willing to bestow it that he becomes a suitor to us, "Seek my face".  He seeks us, to seek him.  It is strange that heaven should seek earth, yet it is so."

His goodness flows to us out of mercy of which John MacArthur writes, "Mercy is not the same as grace.  Mercy concerns an individuals miserable condition, whereas grace concerns his guilt, which caused the condition.  Divine mercy takes the sinner from misery to glory ( a change of condition), and divine grace takes him from guilt to acquittal, a change of position."  Through Christ's atoning sacrifice we have a change in condition and position which was achieved At Calvary

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary.

By God's Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I'd spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary.
Refrain

Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary.

In Christ,
Mike
