Verse of the Day 5/15

Hebrews 4:16  Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].  Amplified Bible (AMP)

Yesterday we considered mercy and grace as something that we had received by what Christ accomplished at Calvary.  This morning I read today's verse and noticed the words "that we may receive mercy" and "find grace" for every need.  And how do we go about getting this?  By drawing near to God.  Not in confidence of ourselves, who we are, or what we've accomplished but because of who Jesus is and his "unmerited" favor.

We proclaim and call Him Lord, which literally means that He owns us, He is our Master.  But He doesn't hold that over us as a domineering tyrannical king, but as a merciful Savior.  You wouldn't want to approach a tyrant for fear of how he might react.  We approach Him as Lord and as friend.  The previous verse tells us that we can approach Him with confidence because He had been tempted when He came and lived among us, He understands, He knows what we're going through and He calls us to approach Him in time of need for help, well timed and appropriate help.  Isn't that what we all need?

Let us fearlessly, confidently and boldly draw near to Him today.

Just when I need Him, Jesus is near,
Just when I falter, just when I fear;
Ready to help me, ready to cheer,
Just when I need Him most.
  • Refrain:
    Just when I need Him most,
    Just when I need Him most,
    Jesus is near to comfort and cheer,
    Just when I need Him most.

In Christ,
Mike

Hebrews 4:15-16

English Standard Version (ESV)

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
