Verse of the Day 5/26

1 Thessalonians 2:4  but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.  English Standard Version (ESV)

It seems to be the case more and more in today's society that politicians have become people pleasers.  They say things, develop policies designed to please as many people as possible in order to secure votes and keep the party in power, in control.  Seldom do we see someone who is willing to take a stand in what they believe in even though it may be contrary to the winds of public opinion.

Paul looked at himself as someone "entrusted" with the gospel, the truth, and was compelled to hold to it, not to please people but to please God.  He called for his readers to do the same and he calls on us to follow in that tradition this day.  Just how do we go about doing that and putting our faith into action?  It is by seeking His will through His Word and in prayer, calling upon Father, Son and Holy Spirit to do their work in our lives.

An old hymn came to mind as I thought about that.  "Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart".  May it be our prayer to follow Him more closely this day.

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love.
Has thou not bid me love thee, God and King? All, all thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind. I see thy cross; there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek thee, and O let me find.
In Christ,
Mike

The Message (MSG)

No Hidden Agendas

3-5 God tested us thoroughly to make sure we were qualified to be trusted with this Message. Be assured that when we speak to you we're not after crowd approval—only God approval. Since we've been put through that battery of tests, you're guaranteed that both we and the Message are free of error, mixed motives, or hidden agendas. We never used words to butter you up. No one knows that better than you. And God knows we never used words as a smoke screen to take advantage of you.
